Although you should start caring for your child’s smile as soon as they are born, you may wonder when you should schedule their first visit with our dentists. You should plan on your child’s first dental appointment within six months of their first tooth and before age 1 if possible. Along with giving your child a checkup, our team can use this visit to help your child feel comfortable at the office and develop a positive attitude about visiting the dentist.

What can you expect during your child’s first visit? Often, the first visit is a great chance for your child to tour the office, meet our dentists and team, and get comfortable with visiting our practice. We will greet you and your child then talk with you about your child’s medical and health history as well as any developmental issues, habits and dietary particulars. Then, we will give your child a very gentle exam and talk with you about anything we find. We may also take time to give you tips on brushing and flossing and talk with you about fluoride treatments or dental sealants. We will answer any questions you or your child may have and schedule your child for future appointments.

Remember, your child will follow your lead. Stay calm and positive about dental visits and never use a trip to the dentist as a threat. You can read books or watch videos about dental visits with your child and even provide a good example by caring for your own teeth and keeping your own dental appointments!
