Preventative Dentistry
The fundamentals for maintaining a healthy smile.
Keeping Kids Cavity-Free
Preventative dentistry is essential to preventing tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems. It involves a combination of at-home care and professional dental services.
This proactive approach helps your child stay healthy, avoid bigger dental procedures, and save you time and money.
At our Greensboro and Durham dental offices, we’ll help your child to grow up viewing dentistry in a positive light and establishing healthy habits that’ll carry on into adulthood.
Our preventative dentistry services include:

Routine dental exams allow us to catch problems early on and intervene before they worsen. We also use this time to take x-rays, monitor your child’s development, examine the jaw and bite alignment, and provide educational information and tips.
Our highly trained dental hygienists will thoroughly yet gently clean your child’s teeth. This involves removing any plaque, tartar, or stains left behind from brushing that could lead to decay, polishing the enamel, and applying a fluoride application (as needed). They’ll walk your child (and you) through each step to relieve nerves and build trust.
Despite maintaining a regular hygiene routine, many children struggle to care for the teeth towards the back of their mouths (molars). The surfaces of these teeth contain pits and grooves, which can trap debris and cause plaque to build up. If left untreated, this can lead to cavities and other dental issues.
The good news is that Dr. Gregory and Rachel Perentis are here to help with a pediatric service called dental sealants. This transparent coating makes the surface of your child’s tooth smooth, so it’s easier to keep clean, thus reducing the risk of cavities!
If your child clenches or grinds their teeth at night, they may benefit from a nightguard. This small nighttime oral appliance will protect their teeth, prevent excessive or uneven wear and tear, and relieve jaw pain.
If your child plays a sport, we recommend they wear a custom mouthguard. It’ll protect their teeth without disrupting their ability to perform. It’s a lot cheaper than restorative dental work!
If your child loses a baby tooth before the permanent tooth erupts, we may recommend a space maintainer. It’ll preserve that gap until the permanent tooth comes in and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting.
I absolutely LOVE Atlantis Dentistry!!! My kids have been going there for over 14 years, and we have NEVER had any issues! Friendly staff, clean, and great dentist! Thank you for continuing to keep my kids’ teeth looking their best!
